Hair Care Tips and Tricks
Hi I'm Jewel! After so many years of women asking me how I got my hair this long and strong, I decided to make a dedicated blog to the secrets of my long hair. No "good hair" doesn't run in my family, in fact my mom, dad, brother and sister all struggle with hair loss, thinning and balding. My mom has seen some new growth, after following some of these steps below.
Stop Washing Your Hair Everyday

Ok I know you've heard it before, and I know it's disappointing every time, but in my opinion and experience it's very crucial in growing your hair long, to take breaks from shampooing, conditioning, and even water.
I discovered a difference in hair fall out and growth once I stopped washing.
I now have a strict ritual in place where I go 7-10 without even getting it wet. It's hard because I live by the beach and love to swim, but will only dunk my head on "hair washing days" I even mark on the calendar when I wash my hair to stay on track. That being said your hair training may be more in the ballpark of 3-4 days depending on your hair type. It will take time to feel comfortable with not washing your hair.
Reasons not washing can be beneficial
-
Preserves Natural Oils: Your scalp produces oils that nourish and protect your hair. Over washing can strip these oils, leading to dryness and breakage.
-
Reduces Damage: Less washing means less exposure to harsh shampoos, heat styling, and friction, which can weaken hair over time.
-
Encourages a Healthier Scalp: A balanced scalp environment supports hair growth. However, too much buildup from dirt and oils can clog follicles and slow growth.
-
The key is finding a balance that works for your hair type!
Stop Heating Your Hair

Here we go again! Yes you already know it's bad, but you do it anyway. I never ever heat style my hair, not even at the salon (I walk out with wet hair) With the exception of ironing my bangs.
Excessive heat styling can damage hair follicles, weaken strands, and slow growth. Here’s why limiting heat exposure is beneficial:
-
Prevents Breakage: High temperatures strip moisture, making hair brittle and prone to snapping.
-
Protects Follicles: Heat can weaken follicles, leading to thinning and slower regrowth.
-
Reduces Split Ends: Frequent heat styling causes split ends, making hair appear shorter and less healthy.
-
Maintains Scalp Health: Overheating can dry out the scalp, disrupting natural oil balance and affecting hair growth.
-
Preserves Hair Strength: Heat alters protein structure in hair, reducing elasticity and resilience
Limit Silicones
I'm always mindful of silicones in hair products, and limit or avoid using. Currently I'm formulating an all natural leave in serum that will mimic the effect of silicones, but will nourish instead of damage.
Why Silicones Can Be Bad for Hair (Long-Term Concerns)
The issues with silicones arise when they are used repeatedly, especially in products that aren’t water-soluble.
-
Build-Up Over Time
-
Non-water-soluble silicones can accumulate, coating hair so heavily that moisture and beneficial treatments have a harder time penetrating.
-
This can make hair appear shiny but be brittle underneath.
-
-
Masking Damage Instead of Repairing
-
Creates an illusion of healthy hair, while underlying dryness or breakage continues unnoticed.
-
-
Potential Dryness
-
Over time, silicone build-up can repel water-based hydration, leading to a drier hair shaft.
-
-
Weighing Down Hair
-
Can make fine or low-porosity hair feel heavy and limp after repeated use.
-
-
Scalp Issues
-
Build-up near the roots may clog follicles and dull hair over time, especially if cleansing is inadequate.
-
Common Silicone Names in Hair Care Products
Silicones often end with “-cone”, “-conol”, or “-siloxane”, but not always. Here’s a comprehensive list:
Non-Water-Soluble Silicones (most prone to buildup)
-
Dimethicone
-
Cetearyl Methicone
-
Cyclomethicone (partially volatile, some rinse out)
-
Cyclopentasiloxane
-
Cyclohexasiloxane
-
Trimethylsilylamodimethicone
-
Phenyl Trimethicone
-
Stearyl Dimethicone
-
Cetyl Dimethicone
-
Behenoxy Dimethicone
Water-Soluble or Easier-to-Remove Silicones (less buildup)
-
Dimethicone Copolyol
-
PEG-8 Dimethicone
-
PEG-12 Dimethicone
-
Lauryl Methicone Copolyol
-
Amodimethicone (removable with mild surfactants, especially if paired with trideceth-12 or cetrimonium chloride)
-
Bis-PEG-18 Methyl Ether Dimethyl Silane

Braid Your Hair Often
I have very long hair at this point, and I live in a humid climate so having my hair in braids is actually a pleasure.
Directly after washing my hair, I add a detangler, gently brush it out, and do two French braids. I will leave these braids in place for up to 3 days. When I take them out I have voluminous curls that look quite lovely. Once the curls die down, sometimes I will re braid
French braids, like other braided hairstyles, can support hair growth by protecting your strands from breakage and damage. Here’s how they help:
-
Reduces Breakage: Since your hair is neatly woven, it minimizes friction and prevents split ends.
-
Locks in Moisture: Braiding helps retain hydration, keeping your hair nourished and less prone to dryness.
-
Protects the Scalp: A healthy scalp is key for hair growth, and braids reduce exposure to environmental stressors.
-
Low Maintenance: Less daily styling means less manipulation, which can prevent unnecessary hair loss.
While braids don’t directly make hair grow faster, they create an environment that supports healthy growth.
Mulberry Silk Bonnet

Silk Bonnet
I haven't been using this for too long, but I'm already hooked! It's crazy how much hair gets ripped out in the night, not to mention the tangles. This bonnet keeps every hair intact and nice and smooth. If you sleep with damp hair, you will have nice waves in the morning.
A Mulberry Silk Bonnet can be a game-changer for hair health and growth! Here’s why:
-
Reduces Friction & Breakage: Unlike cotton or synthetic fabrics, silk is incredibly smooth, minimizing friction while you sleep. Less friction means fewer split ends and breakage, helping your hair retain length.
-
Locks in Moisture: Silk naturally retains moisture, preventing your hair from drying out overnight. Hydrated hair is less prone to damage and breakage, promoting healthier growth.
-
Prevents Frizz & Tangles: The smooth texture of silk helps keep hair strands aligned, reducing frizz and tangles. This is especially beneficial for curly or textured hair.
-
Protects Hair Styles: If you’ve spent time styling your hair, a silk bonnet helps maintain your look overnight, reducing the need for excessive heat styling, which can damage hair.
-
Supports Scalp Health: A healthy scalp is key to hair growth. Silk bonnets help maintain a clean and balanced scalp by reducing exposure to rough fabrics that can cause irritation.

Head Scratcher Scalp Massager
Scalp Stimulation
It started many years ago when my eczema spread to my scalp. I was obsessively itching my scalp throughout the day. Even though my dermatologist provided a solution, I didn't ever follow through, for about 2 years I had persistent eczema on my scalp. If you have eczema you know that's how long flare-ups can last. It was at the end of the 2 years I realized just how thick my hair had become! I started to share the knowledge of scalp stimulation with everyone I knew. Even though I no longer have eczema on my scalp, I continue to scratch my scalp everyday.
You can use your nails or various devices, the one I recommend it actually the most basic, but probably most effective as it is closest to the human nail
-
Scalp stimulation, often through massage, can promote hair growth by increasing blood circulation to the hair follicles, delivering more nutrients, and encouraging healthier hair production.
-
Some studies suggest that regular scalp massages may lead to thicker hair over time.
-
Additionally, scalp massages can help reduce stress, which is known to contribute to hair loss.

Wet Brush
The Right Brush
Wet Brushes have been my favorite brand for years. I have to brush my hair throughout the day so it matters what kind of brush I use
A Wet Brush can help with hair growth in a few ways:
-
Gentle Detangling: Unlike regular brushes, Wet Brushes have flexible bristles that glide through wet hair without pulling or breaking strands. Less breakage means healthier hair that can grow longer.
-
Scalp Stimulation: Brushing your hair gently can improve blood circulation in the scalp, which helps deliver nutrients to hair follicles, encouraging growth.
-
Even Oil Distribution: Brushing helps spread natural oils from the scalp down to the ends, keeping hair moisturized and reducing split ends.

NuDerma Professional Wand
High Frequency Wand
I originally bought this wand for my skin. Then started to use it on my hair to sanitize and refresh after several days of not washing. But now I fully realize the benefits for hair growth!
The NuDerma Professional Skin Therapy Wand isn't just for skincare—it can also support hair growth by stimulating the scalp with high-frequency therapy.
Here's how it works:
-
Boosts circulation: The wand increases blood flow to the scalp, ensuring hair follicles receive essential nutrients and oxygen.
-
Energizes dormant follicles: Weak or inactive follicles get a wake-up call, encouraging stronger, healthier hair growth.
-
Reduces buildup: The antibacterial properties of Argon gas help eliminate dandruff, excess oil, and clogged follicles, which can contribute to hair thinning.
For best results, users typically apply the comb electrode to their scalp for 5-10 minutes per session, 2-3 times per week.

Dry Shampoo
For the days when my hair seems a little too oily for public, and I want more volume. This dry shampoo is my favorite. Especially for my bangs which pick up oils from my face applications
Dry shampoo will not directly promote hair growth, but helps you extend between washings.
Acure Dry Shampoo

Improve Your Diet
I eat a diet high in protein, fiber, and especially good fats. I don't eat meat everyday, mainly vegetables, always incorporating a good amount of fat. Such as coconut cream or oil, ghee or butter, nuts and seeds. I also follow an intermittent fasting diet, where I only eat in about a 4-6 hour window per day.
A nutrient-rich diet can help support hair growth and keep your strands strong. Here are some key foods to include:
-
Protein-rich foods: Hair is mostly made of protein, so eating eggs, lean meats, fish, and legumes can help strengthen hair.
-
Omega-3 fatty acids: Found in fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, omega-3s help nourish hair follicles and promote growth.
-
Iron and zinc: Spinach, beans, and oysters are great sources of iron and zinc, which support hair health.
-
Vitamin C: Berries, citrus fruits, and sweet peppers help with collagen production, which strengthens hair.
-
Biotin: Eggs, nuts, and seeds contain biotin, which plays a role in keratin production for healthy hair.
-
Vitamin E: Almonds, sunflower seeds, and avocados provide vitamin E, which helps protect hair follicles.
All Supplements I Take
There are a many more supplements I take in addition to the one listed above, below are how they may possibly impact my hair growth. I don't take everything daily but, rotate between these supplements throughout the week, taking care to not over-do certain vitamins, and may take breaks as long as a couple of months.
